Book Review: We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

I've been reading a lot of young adult fiction lately and this was on of those books that I kept seeing over on Instagram, being recommended left right and centre and when I saw it was actually quite a small book I thought I'd give it a go. If nothing else it would be a quick easy read.
And I wasn't wrong, I read it very quick and it was very easy.

However, I did struggle a bit with this book to begin.  In fact, It took me till almost half of the book for me to really start to into it.
I wasn't too fond of the writing style. It did seem quite juvenile for me, as a 31 year old, but it did make for an easy read, although it was a very slow beginning.
The story goes back and forth between certain years that events occurred but because it was all so similar I would forget a couple of pages into a chapter exactly what timeline I was reading.
There wasn't much character development and not much dialogue of importance, at least not till a good three thirds of the way.
When we start getting to the end of the book, a lot happens. It did peak my interest, I did feel I wanted to read the end, I started to have some suspicions about what was going on and it did start to get a get more tense, a bit more exciting.... The ending I thought was really good.
To be honest this film reminded me of Cruel Intentions- we all loved that film growing up but essentially the only the thing that made that film good (aside from the girl on girl snogging) was the ending. Because of that ending, that film scored high for us teens and this is what this book is for me as an adult reader. I can easily see though how younger adults or teenagers would love all this book, it is absolutely written for them so if you're within that age group and you're a fan of YA's then I would definitely recommend this book to you. With that said... whatever your age, if you are quite well read then  I would suggest to steer clear.

In all I'd give this book 3.5 out of 5 stars. "Wasn't bad in the end."
